BELFAST’S BEST MARGARITA

DUBLIN'S BEST MARGARITA

Andrew Ennis from Peruke & Periwig meanwhile won over the judges with his imaginative twist on the classic cocktail. Andrew was inspired by the terroirs of two unique ingredients; Cuervo tequila and Irish Orange Blossom honey. The two ingredients combined perfectly together and with a note of sherry and citrus to add a salty complexity – this was a beautiful and balanced cocktail – served over hand-carved ice in an Irish clay mug.

THE MARGARITA

ARE YOU READY FOR THE CUERVO CHALLENGE?

The quintessential Mexican cocktail, the margarita is believed to have been created sometime during the U.S. Prohibition (1920’s), yet many tales surround the creation of the popular cocktail.

One of the more likely stories is that the margarita is based on an American cocktail –the Daisy. A daisy translated into Spanish is “margarita” and the cocktail consists of three simple elements; spirit, sweet and sour.

Jose Cuervo started promoting the margarita as early as 1945 aiming to build morale after World War II with a campaign called “Margarita – more than just a girl’s name”.

Jose Cuervo has become synonymous with the margarita ever since and strives to inspire the trade to be innovative with this classic – allowing the margarita to grow from strength to strength.

Having worked in a number of top bars in London, one of the cocktail capitals of the world, and spending time in the home of Jose Cuervo in Tequila, Mexico, Oli now travels all over the UK and Ireland educating bartenders and consumers on the world of tequila.

He knows a great margarita when he tastes one, so it’s only fitting that he’s the head judge.

On the subject of margaritas, Oli says;
“The Margarita owes its character to tequila, which is the spirit that captures the heart and soul of Mexico, including its traditions, its magic, and its history. Tequila infuses the margarita with fun and intensity and gives it an edge over other cocktails and spirits. Being a versatile cocktail, I look forward to seeing some unique recipes unfold during the competition”
